1. Understanding Batocera & ISO Files
Batocera is a Linux-based OS that turns almost any computer into a retro gaming console.
An ISO file is a digital copy of an optical disc (CD, DVD, GameCube, PS2, etc.).
- Open Etcher.
- Click "Flash from file" → Select your Batocera
.imgfile. - Click "Select target" → Choose your USB drive (ensure it is empty!).
- Click "Flash!"
- Wait for validation. Once done, Windows will pop up an error saying "You need to format the disk." Click Cancel. Do not format it. Windows cannot read Linux partitions (EXT4).
Final Summary
- Download Batocera ISO from official site
- Flash to USB with Etcher
- Boot Batocera
- Add game ISOs (PS1, PS2, etc.) to correct
roms/folders - Add BIOS files for disc-based systems
- Scrape and play
- Pi 4: Supports Vulkan drivers (great for N64/PSP).
- Pi 5: Newer kernel support for the faster chip.
