Criticisms and Limitations
No project is perfect. Some scholars note that the translation speed is slow – at the current pace, it will take another 30 years to translate all of Augustine's sermons or John Chrysostom’s complete homilies. Furthermore, a few early volumes used translations based on older, outdated critical editions (later revised). However, the series continues to update and reprint corrected editions. - Introductory Study (Estudo Introdutório): A substantial essay (often 50-100 pages) by a specialist, situating the author, the work, its historical context, its doctrinal themes, and its reception history.
- Critical Apparatus in Translation: Key textual variants are explained in footnotes, not hidden away. Doctrinal terms (e.g., homoousios, perichoresis) are carefully explained the first time they appear.
- Thematic and Scriptural Indices: Essential for academic research, these indices allow readers to trace how a specific biblical verse or theme was interpreted by the Fathers.
- Direct Translation: The preference is for elegant but clear Portuguese that respects the rhetorical style of the original—from the passionate sermons of John Chrysostom to the introspective meditations of Augustine.
- Santo Agostinho – Confissões: The most readable and influential.
- Santo Atanásio – A Encarnação do Verbo: Short, powerful, and Christ-centered.
- Clemente Romano e Inácio de Antioquia (Volume 1 – Padres Apostólicos): See the Church just after the New Testament.
