Intersectionality, a term coined by Black feminist scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw, highlights the ways in which different forms of oppression intersect and impact marginalized communities. For trans people, this means acknowledging the ways in which racism, sexism, homophobia, and ableism intersect to create unique challenges and barriers. Today, transgender individuals are more visible in the mainstream than ever before, with figures like Laverne Cox, Elliot Page, and Rachel Levine occupying spaces in media and government. 7. How to Be an Ally (To Both Trans People & LGBTQ+ Culture)
- Normalize sharing pronouns (e.g., in email signatures, introductions).
- Don't assume someone's gender, pronouns, or sexual orientation based on appearance.
- If you make a mistake (misgender or deadname someone): Correct yourself briefly ("Sorry, 'she'"), apologize once privately if needed, and do better. Avoid long, guilt-ridden apologies.
- Listen to trans people – but don't demand emotional labor from them. Seek out educational content (books, documentaries, trans creators) on your own time.
- Support trans-led organizations and oppose legislation that harms trans youth and adults.
- Understand that "protecting women and children" rhetoric is often a weapon against trans people. Real safety comes from inclusion and respect, not exclusion.
