The Legacy of Shree-Lipi

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Marathi computing was chaotic. Different software used different "ASCII-based" encodings. Shree-Lipi (developed by Modular Infotech) became the de-facto standard for the Marathi publishing industry. M G Shree became the most popular variant of this encoding because of its readability in print and its support for complex conjunct consonants (संयुक्त अक्षरे) common in Marathi, such as "त्र," "ज्ञ," and "क्ष."
