If you are looking to get your hands on Pathfinder 1st Edition (1e)

In a physical book, cross-referencing a rule meant flipping through hundreds of pages, utilizing multiple bookmarks, and slowing the game's pace to a crawl. Well-optimized Pathfinder PDFs featured built-in bookmarks, searchable text, and hyperlinked tables of contents. This digital infrastructure transformed how game masters (GMs) prepped for sessions and how players built characters. Key tools like fillable PDF character sheets and digitized reference modules enabled automated calculations and fast lookups, allowing tables to harness the mechanical depth of the system without being buried by its complexity. Abstract

The transition of Paizo Publishing’s Pathfinder Roleplaying Game from its First Edition (PF1e, 2009-2019) to Second Edition (PF2e, 2019-present) created a unique digital ecosystem. Unlike earlier editions of Dungeons & Dragons, PF1e was born during the mature era of PDF distribution. This paper examines the lifecycle of PF1e PDFs as artifacts, analyzing (1) Paizo’s official watermarked PDF strategy, (2) the role of the Open Game License (OGL) in enabling third-party PDFs, and (3) the persistent phenomenon of unauthorized scanned and pirated PDFs. We argue that the abundance and structure of PF1e PDFs directly influenced player retention in the edition post-2019.
