Abstract: Malayalam cinema, originating from the southwestern Indian state of Kerala, occupies a unique space in Indian film history. Unlike the masala-driven formulas of Bollywood or the star-centric spectacles of Telugu and Tamil cinema, the Malayalam film industry (colloquially known as Mollywood) has often been celebrated for its narrative realism, thematic complexity, and deep entanglement with the socio-cultural fabric of Kerala. This paper argues that Malayalam cinema is not merely a reflection of Kerala culture but an active, dialectical agent in its construction, critique, and evolution.
